Waters is concerned in her fiction to foreground hidden lesbian history within the setting of mainstream fiction; to re-enhance and centrally reposition the lesbian historical genre. Unlike Jeanette Winterson, whose more challenging talent has been nourished by the examples of Virginia Woolf and Italo Calvino, Waters, it seems to me now, belongs in the tradition of Patrick Hamilton and Beryl Bainbridge.
